On-Site Calibration

On-Site Audiometer Calibration in Cincinnati, Ohio

Foster Special Instruments is based in Blue Ash, so Cincinnati is our home territory. A technician calibrates your audiometers to ANSI S3.6 at your own facility, checks the booth on the same visit, and leaves you with a certificate for your OSHA records.

Your technician starts in Blue Ash

Our shop and office sit at 6941 Cornell Road, Suite B, Blue Ash, Ohio 45242. When you book on-site calibration in Cincinnati, the technician loads the reference equipment there and drives to your plant, clinic, or school. Nothing ships, and your audiometer never leaves the building.

Jeff Schroeder is the technician. The person who answers the phone at 513-891-0868 is the person who will stand in your booth, so questions about your specific audiometer get a direct answer.

What the OSHA hearing conservation standard asks of you

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95(h) requires that audiometric tests run on audiometers that meet ANSI S3.6 and are maintained and used in accordance with it. The standard sets three layers of checking, and only some of them belong to us.

  • Your staff runs a functional check before each day's use, listening to the output and testing a person with known, stable thresholds.
  • An acoustic calibration check is due at least once a year. A deviation of 15 dB or more calls for an exhaustive calibration.
  • An exhaustive calibration is due at least every two years.

Booth check on the same visit

A calibrated audiometer in a noisy booth still produces bad thresholds. While we are on site, we measure the sound levels inside the booth against ANSI S3.1, which sets the maximum permissible ambient noise for audiometric testing. The result appears on your audiometer certificate as the Room Acoustics Level Test section, so one document covers both the instrument and the room it sits in.

Who we serve around Cincinnati

The Cincinnati area has a wide mix of noise-exposed work. Consumer goods manufacturing, aerospace engine work near Evendale, grocery distribution centers, machine shops, and automotive assembly in Sharonville all run hearing conservation programs that depend on a current audiometer calibration.

Smaller programs matter just as much. A twelve-person machine shop with one portable audiometer needs the same ANSI S3.6 documentation as a large plant, and the visit is the same size job for us.

Other instruments on the same trip

If a technician is already on your site, it makes sense to look at everything that needs a date. We also calibrate the following during the same visit.

  • Spirometers and 3 L calibration syringes.
  • Breath alcohol testers. Foster calibrates these instruments and trains technicians. We do not sell or perform employee testing.
  • Vision testers.
  • EKG machines.

Towns and suburbs we cover

On-site calibration is routine in Hamilton, Butler, Warren, Clermont, Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties. That includes Blue Ash, Sharonville, Mason, West Chester, Fairfield, Hamilton, Norwood, Florence, Covington, Erlanger, Batavia, Milford, and Loveland. If you are a little outside that list, call and ask. We probably already pass by.

Pair calibration with hearing testing

Many Cincinnati employers also use Foster for mobile hearing testing, and the two visits fit together. Calibration can be scheduled the same day as an on-site audiogram clinic, so the testing equipment is verified right before it is used. Details are on our Cincinnati hearing testing page.

Mail-in, loaners, and what you receive

If you prefer, ship the audiometer to our Blue Ash bench, or drop it off if you are local. When an audiometer needs an extensive repair, you can borrow one of our free loaners so testing keeps going. Every calibration ends with a certificate calibrated to ANSI S3.6, plus a reminder before the next due date.

Common questions

Do you really come to my facility in Cincinnati?

Yes. The technician drives from our Blue Ash location with the reference equipment and calibrates on site. No shipping and no unit left without an audiometer.

How often does my audiometer need calibration?

OSHA 1910.95 calls for an acoustic calibration check at least annually and an exhaustive calibration at least every two years. Your own staff performs the daily functional check.

Can you check my booth at the same time?

Yes. We measure booth sound levels to ANSI S3.1 during the visit, and the result is reported as the Room Acoustics Level Test section on the audiometer certificate.

I have an audiometer from another manufacturer. Is that a problem?

No. We calibrate the instruments we sell and most major brands, whether or not you bought from us.

What if my audiometer is out of tolerance and needs a long repair?

Calibrating with Foster gives you access to our free loaner instruments during extensive repairs, so your hearing conservation schedule does not slip.

Can I send the audiometer in instead?

Yes. Ship it to our Blue Ash facility or drop it off. On-site is simply the option with the least disruption for larger fleets.
