Audiometer Not Responding or Won't Connect to the Computer

What's happening

Your audiometer connects to the computer through a single cable — the USB Computer Interface Cable, usually just called the CIC. That one cable carries power detection, the USB data connection, and (on setups using spoken instructions) a small audio jack. When the software can't see the audiometer, or throws an error the moment it starts up or starts a test, the cause is almost always somewhere along that connection chain rather than a dead instrument. Work through these in order — it's the same sequence that clears most of these calls without anything needing to be shipped anywhere.

If you have more than one audiometer, they connect to each other in a daisy chain: each unit has a "computer" input and an "expansion" output. Keep that in mind for the isolation steps further down.

Try these in order

  1. Confirm you're looking at the audiometer, not the bio-acoustic simulator (BAS). They sit near each other and both have lights, but they're separate boxes. Make sure the power light you're checking is actually on the audiometer.
  2. Check the power light. It should be lit. If it's not, check that the audiometer's own power supply is plugged into a wall outlet — the instrument is powered by that power supply, not by the USB cable running to the computer. On the CCA-200mini, there's also a small on/off switch built into the power supply itself; it's easy to bump, and some sites tape it down for exactly that reason.
  3. Check both ends of the CIC cable. Power, USB, and audio jack (if used) should all be fully seated. If you see any exposed wire or fraying, replace the cable before doing anything else.
  4. Restart the computer. It sounds too simple, but it clears a real share of these — especially the "it was working an hour ago" kind.
  5. Check Device Manager. Look under Ports (COM & LPT). The interface cable should show up as its own port. If it's missing or flagged with a warning icon, the driver isn't loaded correctly.
  6. Turn off USB power management for that port. Windows will sometimes suspend a USB port it thinks is idle, which looks exactly like a random disconnect. In Device Manager, open the device's Properties, go to Power Management, and uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." This single setting is the most common fix for "it disconnects randomly, and a restart brings it back."
  7. Try a different USB port, and if you have a second computer with the software installed, try the audiometer there. This is the fastest way to tell whether the fault is the cable, the audiometer, or the computer itself.
  8. If there's a patch panel on the booth, bypass it. Connect the cable directly to the audiometer outside the booth wiring if that's practical, to rule out a bad patch-panel connection.
  9. If you have multiple audiometers daisy-chained, isolate them one at a time. Unplug the serial cable from the last unit's expansion port and test the ones ahead of it in the chain, then work backward. If removing one unit lets the rest work fine, that unit needs service. If all of them fail no matter what you disconnect, the shared interface cable is the more likely culprit.

A few specific messages worth knowing

A serial number reading as all zeros, with a message about corrupted memory or calibration values. This is a different situation from a bad connection — it means the instrument's onboard memory got scrambled, usually by a power surge or static discharge, not that anything is physically broken. The fix is a new calibration, not a repair. Get in touch and we'll get that scheduled; you don't need to troubleshoot cables for this one.

A serial number that doesn't match the number printed on your instrument (all zeros, all ones, or otherwise clearly a placeholder). This usually means the software hasn't picked up the real device ID yet — common right after first setup or right after a replacement unit arrives. It's typically resolved by running through the software's device setup/verify step, not by anything mechanical.

Multiple people logged into the same computer. If more than one Windows account uses the machine and someone left the program open under a different login, the software can throw a connection error until the computer is rebooted.

When to call us

  • The power light won't come on no matter what outlet or cable you try.
  • You've swapped cables, tried different ports, and tried a different computer, and it still won't connect.
  • The response light doesn't react at all when the response switch is plugged in or pressed — that's a hardware check we need to look at directly.
  • You're seeing the "serial number 00000 / memory corrupted" message. Nothing there needs fixing on your end, but the unit does need a fresh calibration, so let us know.
  • Anything would require opening the instrument itself. That's not a customer step, and it's the quickest way to void the current calibration.
