Benson Software Won't Launch, or Errors After a Windows Update

What's happening

After a Windows update, a Windows 11 upgrade, or a move to a new PC, the Benson software (CCA-100, CCA-200, CCA-200mini, or CCS-200) can stop launching cleanly. The symptoms show up a few different ways: a "hot key error" that keeps the program from opening at all, a window that launches straight to the taskbar and won't render, a freeze the moment you try to maximize it, or a startup/initialization error. These all trace back to a short list of causes — a corrupted Windows user profile, a per-machine configuration file that didn't survive a migration, antivirus quietly quarantining program files, or a software version that predates Windows 11 support. Work through the list below in order; most of it is quick checks before you ever need to pull in IT.

Try these in order

  1. Restart the computer, then try launching the program again.
  2. Check whether antivirus quarantined program files — especially if this started right after a Windows update, an antivirus definition update, or installing a second Benson product on the same PC.
  3. Confirm your software version actually supports Windows 11.
  4. If the program won't render a window, freezes on maximize, or throws a startup/initialization error on an otherwise normal install, reinstall it.
  5. If you're getting a "hot key error" or the program won't open at all, the fix is almost always a fresh Windows user profile — a job for your IT department.
  6. If the error specifically mentions encryption or TLS, that's a Windows-configuration item for IT, not a user-level fix.

Step 2 — Rule out antivirus quarantine

This is the single most common cause of "it worked yesterday, now it won't start" right after any kind of update. Antivirus software can quietly remove or quarantine program files after an update, or after a second Benson product gets installed on the same computer — the program then throws a C# error, a "file specified" error, or a similar initialization failure the moment you try to open it.

The fix is the same either way:

  1. Uninstall the Benson program.
  2. Add an exclusion in your antivirus software so it stops touching the Benson folders. Have IT exclude:
    • C:\ProgramData\Benson Medical Instruments
    • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Benson Medical Instruments, plus the subfolder for whichever product you run (CCA-100, CCA-200, CCS-200, or Solo-HC)
    • The SQL database engine folders: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and the matching AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server folders
  3. Reinstall the program.

If you're adding a second Benson product to a PC that already runs one — for example, adding a spirometer program alongside your audiometer software — do the exclusion step before installing the second product. That keeps the antivirus from ever touching the new files in the first place.

Step 3 — Confirm Windows 11 compatibility

Older software builds aren't guaranteed to run on Windows 11, and this has caught sites that upgraded the PC's operating system without checking their Benson version first. If you're planning a Windows 11 migration, or a PC was already moved to Windows 11 and the software won't launch, contact us or Benson support to confirm your installed version is Windows-11-compatible before you spend more time troubleshooting. Don't assume an older version will simply work on the new OS — some builds are confirmed not to.

Step 5 — Recreating the Windows user profile

A "hot key error," or a program that won't open at all, is most often a corrupted Windows user profile rather than a problem with the Benson install itself. The fix is having your IT department create a fresh Windows user profile on that PC. Before they do:

  1. Back up your data through the Benson program's own backup function, and save that file somewhere outside the profile being recreated.
  2. If your software uses a Plus Package license key (a physical dongle), confirm with IT that the key is still recognized once the new profile is in place — it needs to be present the same way it was before.
  3. Have IT create the new profile and log into the Benson software from it.

This is also the same class of problem behind a less obvious symptom: an "INI" or shared-configuration-file error, where the software can't find a file it expects — usually right after a PC migration or a Windows profile change. In at least one confirmed case, the fix was recreating a missing folder path (a Common\bul folder under the Benson ProgramData directory) and copying the shared .ini file into it. Because the exact folder and file names can vary by version, contact us or Benson support before digging through ProgramData yourself — we can confirm exactly what needs to be recreated for your install.

That same root cause — a per-machine configuration file that didn't carry over — is also the leading suspect if you start seeing serial-communication timeouts with the instrument mid-session right after a Windows 11 upgrade. Flag that pattern to us specifically so we can check whether it's the same fix or something deeper.

For your IT department

A couple of items in this space belong to IT, not to a user-level walkthrough:

  • "Encryption not supported on the client" errors happen when the TLS version Windows is configured to use doesn't match what the Benson software — or your domain's group policy — expects. The fix is a registry-level change that needs to be applied consistently, and it may also require checking what TLS versions your domain's group policy allows. Hand this to IT rather than treating it as a user step; we can provide the specific registry values IT needs on request.
  • If your organization upgrades the software version and the operating system at the same time, be aware that combination has, in at least one case, broken the login screen entirely and required a live remote session with Benson support to resolve — it wasn't something fixable by trial and error over email. If that happens to you, go straight to calling us rather than working through more self-service steps.

When to call us

Contact Foster Instruments if:

  • You've restarted, ruled out antivirus quarantine, and confirmed Windows 11 compatibility, and the program still won't launch.
  • You're seeing a "hot key error" and want confirmation before recreating the Windows profile, so you don't lose your license key or your data.
  • You're getting an encryption/TLS error and need the exact registry values for your IT department.
  • Software and OS versions were upgraded together and the login screen isn't showing up correctly — this one is best solved live with us or Benson support.
