For technicians who already hold a BAT qualification
Add an instrument to your BAT qualification
Your employer changed devices, or you’re covering a second site on a different machine. Under 49 CFR §40.213(b), BAT qualification is device-specific: you need instrument-specific training and a monitored proficiency demonstration on each evidential breath tester you use. You do notneed to repeat the full BAT course — you submit your BAT certificate number or evidence of completing the BAT course within the last five years, and enroll once per instrument you’re adding.
What you get
- The instrument module for your device — controls and indicators, operating modes, calibration checks and their tolerance under the Quality Assurance Plan, running a test end to end, and the error conditions that pull the instrument from service.
- A written exam on that instrument.
- Five monitored proficiency mockson the actual device, error-free and observed live — CMI’s instrument-only performance check: automatic sampling, manual sampling, an accuracy check, a full screening test, and a calibration.
- A Foster certificatenaming that exact device, issued by your monitor of record under §40.213(c).

Verify your BAT qualification first
Refresher courses and the Device Practicum renew or extend a BAT qualification you already hold — they don’t qualify you on their own. We verify your existing certificate before you enroll. Your BAT course must have been completed within the last five years; older than that, the refresher is the right product.
