Which workplace safety instruments actually require calibration under OSHA?

OSHA doesn't publish one master calibration schedule — the requirement lives inside each specific standard. 29 CFR 1910.95 (occupational noise) requires audiometers to be calibrated per ANSI S3.6, and requires sound level meters and dosimeters used for exposure monitoring to be checked before each day's use with an acoustic calibrator, plus periodic exhaustive calibration on a longer interval. Instruments outside hearing conservation — gas detectors, respirator fit-test equipment, spirometers — each carry their own calibration expectations tied to the standard that governs their use. How often does an audiometer need calibration?

What documentation does a defensible calibration record need?

A calibration certificate that will hold up under inspection or litigation needs the instrument's serial number, the date of calibration, the reference standard used and its traceability (typically NIST-traceable), the as-found and as-left readings, and the technician or lab performing the work. A certificate that just states "calibrated, passed" without as-found data doesn't tell you whether the instrument was drifting before adjustment, which matters if a compliance determination from before that calibration date gets questioned later. Employers should keep these certificates on file for the instrument's service life, not just the most recent one, since a pattern of drift across certificates can itself be useful information about whether an instrument needs replacement.
