Why Does Calibration Matter for Workplace Safety Instruments?

What does calibration actually verify?

Calibration compares an instrument's readings against a known reference standard and adjusts or documents any deviation. For workplace safety instruments — audiometers, sound level meters, dosimeters, spirometers — the reference is traceable through an unbroken chain of comparisons back to a national metrology institute (NIST in the U.S.). An audiometer calibration checks output at each frequency and hearing level against ANSI S3.6 tolerances; a sound level meter calibration verifies its response against a calibrated acoustic source. If the instrument reads outside tolerance, calibration either adjusts it back into spec or, if it can't be brought into tolerance, flags it as out-of-service until repaired. Without this check, an instrument can drift silently — still displaying numbers, just wrong ones — and nobody finds out until an audit or, worse, a missed hazard.

These intervals aren't arbitrary. OSHA's 1910.95 hearing conservation standard requires audiometric calibration checks specifically because a mistuned audiometer can mask a real standard threshold shift or manufacture a false one — either error changes what an employer is legally required to do next. A field calibration check takes minutes; an exhaustive calibration that fails can mean weeks of re-testing employees whose results are now in question.

What happens when calibration is skipped or overdue?

An overdue or skipped calibration doesn't just create a paperwork gap — it puts every test result generated on that instrument in question. If an audiometer hasn't been exhaustively calibrated on schedule and a compliance officer finds it during an OSHA inspection, the employer may need to demonstrate that all audiograms taken since the last valid calibration are still reliable, which is often not possible to prove after the fact. For gas monitors and other safety-critical instruments, an uncalibrated reading can mean a worker enters a space believing air quality is safe when the sensor has drifted low. The cost of the calibration itself is small compared to the cost of a result nobody can stand behind.

What should a calibration certificate include?

A defensible calibration certificate documents the instrument's serial number, the date of calibration, the as-found and as-left readings at each test point, the reference standard used and its own traceability, the technician's identification, and the next-due date. Certificates lacking as-found data are a common gap — without it, there's no record of how far the instrument had drifted before adjustment, which matters if a compliance question ever traces back to a specific test date. Frequently asked questions

Is calibration the same as a functional check?

No. A functional (or "biological") check is a quick daily verification that an instrument is behaving normally — for audiometers, testing a known listener against expected thresholds. A full calibration compares the instrument against a certified reference standard and can adjust internal settings. Functional checks catch gross failures between calibrations; they don't replace calibration.

What does NIST-traceable mean?

It means the reference standard used to calibrate your instrument has its own calibration history that traces, through a documented chain of comparisons, back to a standard maintained by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This chain is what makes a calibration certificate defensible in an audit rather than just a claim.

Can I use an instrument while its calibration is overdue?
