Can Regular Equipment Calibration Reduce Workplace Hazards?

An uncalibrated instrument doesn't fail loudly — it keeps producing readings, just wrong ones. In occupational health testing, that's the hazard: a drifted audiometer clears a worker who's actually developed a threshold shift, or a sound level meter under-reports noise exposure that should have triggered hearing protection. The equipment looks like it's working. The data underneath it isn't.

What actually drifts on occupational health instruments?

Audiometers, sound level meters, dosimeters, spirometers, and breath alcohol testers all rely on internal references — a calibrated tone generator, a pressure transducer, a fuel-cell sensor — that shift over time from mechanical wear, temperature swings, and normal usage. The drift is usually small day to day, which is exactly why it's dangerous: nothing about the instrument's behavior signals that it's out of tolerance. Only a calibration check against a known standard catches it.

How does miscalibration turn into a workplace hazard?

The hazard isn't the instrument itself — it's the decision made from a bad reading. An audiometer reading a few dB off can mask a standard threshold shift that should trigger retraining or refitting of hearing protection under 29 CFR 1910.95. A sound level meter under-reporting noise levels can leave a work area outside the hearing conservation program when it should be inside it. A breath alcohol tester drifting toward false negatives defeats the entire point of a DOT-mandated program under 49 CFR Part 40. In each case, the equipment kept "working" — it just stopped being trustworthy, and nobody knew until something downstream went wrong.

What does a defensible calibration schedule look like?

A schedule that holds up isn't just "calibrate once a year and move on." It follows the manufacturer's specified interval for each instrument type, logs every check with date, technician, and result, and flags instruments that fail a check so they're pulled from service rather than used anyway because the schedule says the next calibration isn't due yet. The paper trail matters as much as the check itself — a calibration certificate is what makes a contested result defensible months or years later, and a gap in that record reads the same as a gap in the calibration itself when someone asks to see it.

How often should an audiometer be calibrated?

A daily biological or acoustic functional check before testing, plus periodic exhaustive calibration per ANSI S3.6 and the manufacturer's schedule — typically annually, though usage and drift history can shorten that interval.

What happens if an instrument fails its calibration check?

It comes out of service immediately. Any results collected since the last passing check should be reviewed, since they were produced by an instrument now known to be out of tolerance.

Can a calibration certificate be backdated to cover a gap?

No. A calibration certificate documents the instrument's condition at the time of the check — it can't retroactively validate results collected during an uncalibrated period.

Does calibration frequency change with how heavily an instrument is used?

Yes. Manufacturer-specified intervals are a baseline; instruments in heavy field use, mobile transport, or harsh environments often warrant more frequent checks than a lightly used unit in a controlled setting.

Who should perform calibration — in-house staff or a vendor?
