Can Calibration Services Improve the Lifespan of My Equipment?

Does calibration actually extend equipment life, or just accuracy?

Calibration's primary job is accuracy — confirming an instrument's output still matches a known reference standard and adjusting it when it doesn't. Lifespan benefits come as a side effect, not the main event. A dosimeter or sound level meter that's drifted out of spec is still mechanically fine; nothing about miscalibration itself wears out a microphone or transducer faster. Where calibration protects lifespan is diagnostic: a technician performing a calibration check has to open the instrument up to its reference points, which surfaces mechanical issues — a failing battery contact, a cracked microphone diaphragm, a drifting sensor — well before those issues cause a field failure or, worse, get missed and produce bad data that looks valid. Regular calibration doesn't make hardware age slower. It catches degradation early enough to fix instead of replace.

What calibration intervals apply to occupational health testing equipment?

Intervals aren't one-size-fits-all, and they're set by standard or manufacturer, not convenience. Audiometers used for OSHA 1910.95 hearing conservation testing need functional (biological or acoustic) checks daily and an acoustic calibration at least annually, with exhaustive calibration every two years per ANSI S3.6. Sound level meters and noise dosimeters typically follow manufacturer-specified intervals, often annual, with a field calibration check before and after each use. Breath alcohol testing devices used for DOT compliance require external calibration checks on a schedule set by 49 CFR Part 40 and the device's evidential/screening classification. Spirometers need periodic verification against a calibration syringe. Running all of these on the manufacturer's stated interval, not a generic "annual" default, is what keeps both compliance and equipment condition intact.

What happens when calibration gets skipped or stretched?

Two failure modes show up, and they're different problems. The first is compliance exposure: an audiogram, breath test, or spirometry result produced on equipment outside its calibration window can be challenged, and in a hearing-loss claim or DOT audit, an expired calibration record undermines the defensibility of every test performed since the last valid check. The second is equipment condition: instruments that go long stretches without a technician opening them up for calibration also go long stretches without anyone checking battery health, connector wear, or transducer condition, so minor issues that would have been a quick fix during a scheduled calibration turn into a failed unit that needs replacement instead of repair. Stretching calibration intervals to save cost tends to move the expense from routine maintenance to unplanned replacement.
