Every evidential breath testing device used in a DOT program has to pass an external calibration check against a known alcohol concentration, and that check runs through one of two reference methods: a wet bath simulator or a dry gas standard. Employers rarely choose between them since the instrument manufacturer usually specifies one, but understanding how the two differ matters when a calibration record gets questioned, when a program is shopping for a new instrument, or when a simulator solution fails at the worst possible time.
What is a wet bath simulator?
A wet bath simulator is a heated glass or plastic chamber that holds a certified alcohol solution, typically at a target concentration such as 0.08, and maintains that solution at a fixed temperature, usually 34 degrees Celsius, to match the temperature of alveolar breath. Air is bubbled through the solution, and the resulting vapor carries a known alcohol concentration into the breath testing device for the external calibration check required under 49 CFR Part 40 Subpart K. The solution is certified to a specific concentration and lot, has a defined shelf life once opened, and must be tracked the same way a program tracks any consumable with an expiration date. A wet bath simulator is the traditional reference method and is still the required standard for many Intoxilyzer models in active DOT service.
What is a dry gas standard?
A dry gas standard delivers a fixed, certified alcohol concentration from a pressurized gas cylinder rather than a heated liquid solution, so there is no bubbling, no temperature control loop, and no solution to mix or replace between certifications. The cylinder itself carries a certificate of analysis from the gas supplier stating the exact concentration and the expiration date of that certification. Dry gas standards are common on newer breath testing platforms because the delivery is more consistent, there is less day-to-day maintenance, and a technician does not need to prepare a fresh bath before every calibration check. The tradeoff is that the cylinder itself is a finite consumable. Once it runs low or its certification expires, it has to be replaced, and a program that does not track cylinder pressure the way it tracked simulator solution levels can be caught short during a scheduled check.

Why does the reference method matter for a DOT program?
